Marie Smith - Residency and Exhibition

We Belong Here

We Belong Here was made in May 2022 as part of the New Forest National Park Artist in Residence at spudWORKS.  The aim of the residency was to reflect upon the richness of the landscape and facilitate a conversation with the community who are perceived to be invisible in the New Forest.  Marie collaborated with seven people of colour based in Hampshire and the New Forest, to create a series of portraits and cyanotypes.

During the portrait sessions Marie and the participants would walk and, talk about their thoughts and feelings about the landscape of the New Forest.  Each participant made a cyanotype to go with their portrait.  Some participants brought objects that meant something to them, whilst others foraged for materials in the New Forest.  What you see in this exhibition is a nuanced reflection of each person.  Cyanotypes also provide an additional context that enhance Marie's portraits.

We Belong Here provided Marie with an opportunity to learn and engage with the community and for the participants to advocate for themselves.

The A1 and A0 prints were printed on recycled blue-black poster paper, that can also be recycled.  Cyanotypes have been made and chosen by the participant, who holds copyright over them.

Exhibition Booklet

The exhibition also includes a book of outtake portraits and landscapes from Marie's residency. Some of the participants have contributed to the text.  Click on the image (right) to download the booklet.
