Our New Common Forest – A Queer Almanac

A final exhibition from the outreach work was held at spudWORKS during August 2022.  This included images created by the participants and curated by Phos.  It also incorporated A Queer Almanac where visitors were invited to add their thoughts and feelings to each of the months.  Visitos could also lay down on the golden blankets and experience the spoken reflections.

Join artist duo Phos’ (Lucy Cash & Luke Pell) for an informal early evening conversation about how queerness, the poetic, choreographic and conversation play out in their practice and, the new work they are creating whilst in residence at SPUDworks this summer: Our New Common Forest - A Queer Almanac.

Talking together about the queerness of nature; as a mode of attention and imagination; for community and connection they will share insights from some of their previous projects; including To Gather | Together | To Touch; Winterage: Last Milk; and In the Ink Dark, as well as ways other LGBTQ+ folks, families and allies can join Our New Common Forest later in July and August.

Come along to say hello, hang out, have a drink and a blether..

Our New Common Forest- A Queer Almanac is a project being developed this Spring-Summer with Phos – artist duo Lucy Cash and Luke Pell

Making moments to come together with LGBTQ+ folx in the New Forest and across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Lucy and Luke are exploring the queerness of nature; what it means to be LGBTQ+ here; what is pride; where do we find it and; how we might draw together shared queer family trees.

Their project began by hosting a tour of Derek Jarman’s Modern Nature at the John Hansard Gallery in Southampton with LGBTQ+ folx and allies back in February.

Since then, they’ve led wanders in the forest, drawing on their choreographic and somatic practice; workshops in making found poetry and performance with Breakout Youth and will be hosting a weekend of creative play designed just for those groups in June at spudWORKS, alongside a public conversation about their work Quiet Queerings with A Space Arts at Gods House Tower on Fri 17 June (listed above.)

From Saturday 30 July – Monday 1 August Phos will be in residence in the spudWORKS gallery assembling this Queer Almanac: an installation that weaves together the words and worlds of folx they’ve met through the project with the poetry they’ve found together in the unique New Forest landscape.

People can drop into the installation and make their own entry in the almanac as it accumulates from 1pm-5pm each day.

On Monday 1 August from 1.30pm-3.30pm you can join Phos for a long table conversation at spudWORKS, set up as a space for more folk to come together, meet, talk about what it is to be LGBTQ+ here and explore the themes of the work with them.

The long table will lead into some drinks and time to be with the installation.
